Telnet is a client-server protocol, based on TCP, and clients generally connect to port 23 on the host providing the service (though like many protocols in use on the Internet which port to use is fairly easy to change). Partly because of the design of the protocol and partly because of the flexibility typically provided by telnet programs, it is also possible to use a Telnet program to establish an interactive TCP connection to some other service on an Internet host. A classic use of this is telnetting to port 25 (where typically an SMTP server is to be found) to debug a mail server.
The Telnet protocol can be divided into a core and a set of extensions. The core protocol is described by IETF documents RFC 854 and RFC 855 which are also collected together in STD 8, which defines fairly basic operating characteristics of the protocol and a means of defining and implementing extensions. There are many extensions, some of which have been adopted as Internet Standards, some of which haven't. IETF STD document numbers from 27 through to 32 define various Telnet extensions (most of which are extremely common). Of the remaining extensions the most useful ones are probably those that are on the IETF standards track as proposed standards; details can be found in STD 1.

Security
There are three main problems with Telnet, making it a bad choice for modern systems from the point of view of computer security:
Commonly used telnet daemons have several vulnerabilities discovered over the years, and probably several more still exist.
Telnet, by default, does not encrypt any data sent over the connection (including passwords), and so it is trivial to eavesdrop on the communications and use the password later for malicious purposes.
Telnet lacks an authentication scheme that makes it possible to ensure that communication is carried out between the two desired hosts, and not intercepted in the middle.
In environments where security is important, such as on the public Internet, telnet should not be used. Telnet sessions are unencrypted. This means that anybody who has access to any router, switch, or gateway located on the network between the two hosts where telnet is being used can intercept the telnet packets passing by and easily obtain login and password information (and whatever else is typed) with any of several common utilities like tcpdump and Ethereal.
These flaws have seen the usage of the Telnet protocol drop rapidly in favor of a more secure and functional protocol called SSH, released in 1995. SSH provides all functionality present in telnet, with the addition of strong encryption to prevent sensitive data such as passwords from being intercepted, and public key authentication, to ensure that the remote computer is actually who it claims to be.
Experts in computer security, such as SANS Institute, and the members of the comp.os.linux.security newsgroup recommend that the use of Telnet for remote logins should be discontinued under all normal circumstances.
When telnet was initially developed in 1969, most users of networked computers were in the computer departments of academic institutions, or at large private and government research facilities. In this environment, security was not nearly as much of a concern as it became after the bandwidth explosion of the 1990s. With the exponential rise in the number of people with access to the Internet, and by extension, the number of people attempting to crack into other people's servers, telnet should generally not ever be used on networks with Internet connectivity.
Telnet clients are still occasionally used to manually "talk" to other services. It is sometimes used in debugging network services such as an SMTP or HTTP server, by serving as a simple way to send commands to the server and examine the responses. Telnet can also be used as a rudimentary IRC client if you know the protocol well enough.
Telnet is also heavily used for Multi User Dungeon games played over the Internet

In recent times, some car manufacturers are opting to replace historically dowelled and interlocking arrangements of con-rod big ends, with physical breaks. There are many mechanics looking at these today, with bewilderment.

Instead of machined faces, stress points are engineered and the casting is then broken. When bolted together, the big end bore or the conrod can be machined to finished size.
By sheer coincidence only, can these parts be inter-changeable, thereafter. In other words, the semi-circular caps that enclose one half of the plain white metal bearing, will only correctly fit its mating section of the original casting.

Some old school mechanics whose eyesight may be compromised, are in a difficult position, and even have issues with the disassembling procedures. The “crack” or “break” can be hard to notice, especially when it is not expected, and partially due to the fact that the “unit” was machined post-breaking.

The un-machined area of the casting has a rough texture as is normal, but masks to some extent, the true configuration of the assembly.
It gets a little more confusing. Instead of the historical physical “bend” or tab (out-turned section of the plain bearing, that use to stop them from spinning), these new types are in two halves, with no obvious means to prevent such spinning. They rely on each half of the plain bearing, being the correct length, with respect to their circumference. Those who still believe heavily on mechanical fastening opposed to modern glues for example may find it difficult to comprehend. And it is often these same people that cannot see the sense of it all.

The theory is that if each bearing half, when together, are slightly larger in diameter than the big-end bore of the connecting rod (con rod)in its correctly “torqued” state, then the outward force should be enough to drive the bearing. It actually makes sense too. If there happened to be more frictional force, inside the bearing (crankshaft diameter), then something is wrong anyway. Bear in mind that some lubricant should be there, as well as a lower frictional coefficient material that lines the big end bearings.

What is it all about?

Cost, speed or efficiencies!!
Each bearing half can be rolled to the correct length and wall-thickness, with one less folding operation for the tab. The con-rod can be cast in one complete piece. Mating halves will be less likely to be confused, but this will happen through human error, as many things do. The less number of operations, the simpler the process, and invariably the cost will come down. Whether profit margins increase, is another story.

An example of deliberate stress point incidence, to ensure that the fracture is within a certain area, has been around for years. It is with the fitting of a relatively large diameter “ball” if you like, within the relatively smaller outer-race bore of a “rose bush” or rose bearing. Common applications of these bushes/bearings are large angle, high-load, low speed, pivot points. Tractors, quarry equipment, fork-lifts, dumpers or any machinery with low precision, self alignment, high “swivel ability”, and low cost rugged requirements.

There is a lot of talk about Content but is it just that and if it is not, then how does one go about reaping rewards.
A brief examination follows.Simply put, without content you have nothing but banners and graphics. You cannot get traffic on those alone. I repeat, you cannot get traffic on those alone!
The very best traffic is search engine traffic because of the price tag.Practically ZERO!

For the most part, search engines react to search terms. Results for search terms are contained within content or text, with the only exception being metatags in general, and domain names. Even those will rarely do it. Rarely!

Keywords or search terms are “matched” with similar words within the text, and the incidence or frequency of them. If an engine holds such “words” from a site within its database, you are much closer to getting free traffic. That is a fact.
Now there are two ways to accomplish that.
1. Create your own content.
2. Use someone else’s content.

Creating your own content is not for everyone, but it is always a good idea to give it a try. You will likely succeed with time, research and experience. Few people are born with esoteric knowledge, however it seems, and are more likely to have applied themselves over time.

Using the content of others should be a consideration also, and is volume dependent. One person alone is limited when a high volume is the expectation. Originally, ghostwriters were employed to make someone look good in a literary sense. Pay person X to write article Y, and the employer retains the copyright. This is widespread, no secret, and perfectly acceptable. This process is very like the way that your boss will exploit your services in return for a fee. It is commerce.

Anyway, the search engines don’t really care who writes something or anything, as long as it is written. Their primary job is to find it, index it, and return it. In a modern context, the copyright regarding the content, is retained by the author of such content, unless otherwise agreed.
What this really means is that you can use content that is relevant to your site and take any credit that is due to you.
The more keywords that are mingled within it, the higher the likelihood that your site will gain ground as an authority on the product. The engines will recognise it, and loyal visitors will have more information on the product as well.

The very best method is to target articles that are theme-relative. If your site is selling shoes, then source articles on shoes and its materials, uses, colours, or anything pertaining to the product. Unless you have done something to upset the search engines, this will always help with few exceptions. If the spiders or bots register a change in a sites content, they are more inclined to revisit. The main advantage to having fast spider return, is to get new “news” out in the public domain. This may offer a time-advantage over competitors.

The very same strategies apply to blogs, which can often be more effective than regular sites, due to their superior structure, internally, and with respect to linking.
Even without a particular targeting exercise, increased content should bring some “incidental traffic” that may often occur as a consequence of the content. In other words; your content may not always be theme related, but the engines could return your site as a match for any keywords that it doesn’t find a more suitable match for. It is up to you to “grab” such traffic, any way that you can.

This is not ideal by any means, but anything is better than nothing, and somewhat cumulative.

When I was no more than the size of an elephants pimple, intelligence, as I know it, was just beginning.

We were all equal and no more than blades of grass, a little greener perhaps, but just as tasteless. There was a certain social equality in our ignorance

However, as I mutated from the size of a blister to that of an enlarged boil, a change occurred.
My brain started to consume the cavity where it once had un-proportional space. I could actually feel the pressure as the contents of my ears were bruised towards the outside world.

With no external physical change apart from that, I ....began to wonder..... and....I became aware of “stuff” that had nothing to do with the daily regimen of existence.

With it came a headache without the use of any baton.

And then I noticed that if I lifted the toilet seat, that it would be higher.
Another headache, and not a boulder in sight. No dizziness, no sign of blood, no watery eyes!

That was twice that I had headaches with no apparent cause.
I hadn’t even “head-butted” my family or friends, that day!!!!!

It was because I thought that others caused such headaches, that I decided to call them “thoughts”!

My girlfriend called around, and I thought she was lovely. Usually, I’d get to the point or to my base purpose.

I began to notice that “grass” could also be used for animal fodder, and started eating it. Consequently, it became obvious that eating grass was not the most profitable use for it, and I quickly stopped.
Anyway, I didn’t have anymore!!!!

I’d never have made such commercial connections before the headaches began.
I began to wash myself, a task unbecoming of a caveman or persons of my filth. I became aware that three years worth of “Adventures’ Soup”, brought little delight to the face of my girlfriend, and her mothers for that matter.

Why would I possibly care about the face of my girlfriend's mother? I thought about this for a split second and deduced that it was a primordial fear, for she too had an enormous baton and a robust physique that could swing it.
It was her proficiency with a baton, and the usual un-conscious state that she brought about, that led to the term "consciousness".

Through experiment and accident, I discovered that if I said something pleasant to my mother-in law to be, then I got meat pies, meat, pies, and other stuff with foreign sounding names.

The "token economy" began.

With a straight face and a well-placed inaccurate comment, my labour input diminished.

Instead of saying sentences which were normal, like "You're looking well.....well...like a compromised crocodile!, I developed shorter sentences such as; You're looking well. Full stop.

Indeed, "The Genesis of Intelligence" is closely tied into "The Genesis of Romance", and the only practical difference was the diet. With intelligence came meat pies, etc., and with the Genesis of Romance came a diet of "multi-vitamined" roses and unlikely/unwary weeds.
My headaches began to attenuate and frankly, my belly began to blossom, due mainly to my flowery diet.

For the first time in my short life, this newfound intelligence seemed to have a preserving effect on my skull and there was no day that I didn't spend many hours of idleness, developing strategies to develop idleness.
Of course, this couldn't work long-term, if all humanity evolved at a similar speed to me. There simply weren't enough pies!

So maximising my idle hours, I also initiated a social development plan, whereby, I would trick others into applying "charming remarks", that returned serious head injury, empty bellies and little serious competition.

As my over complimented mother in law used to say; "It's not what you say, it's how it sounds", whatever that meant.

Just to clarify that: a mother in law was so called, not because the institution of marraige had evolved, but because, domestic law was governed by the mother of one's mate. I can tell you that a baton wielding, robust individual, bereft of compliment, was a rigorous enforcer. I got the lumps to prove that, in a pre-sugared trivial time!!!!

From Artists to Aristrocrats, expression through Quotations is still a widely used vehicle to enforce a point, with some weight!
Comedians even, become charismatic with this ancient communicative tool, that is "Quotations".
Wittingly or unwittingly, many are remembered more for what they were "Quoted" for, as much as what they did.It is much easier to quote something clever or well assembled, than it is to create wise words of your own.

In the past though, where mass media exposure was limited to the very best and the rich, quotations by sundry individuals carried little weight in a historical sense.Now though, there is not much to stop an average person from doing something similar.The propagation tools are already in existence (the Internet), and something sweet-sounding, sharp, blunt, witty, short and relevant, can get some exposure.

In many parts of the western world, silly comic quotations even deliver a point, with Bart and Homer (not the Philosopher, either ), quoted for maximum effect with minimum words.
Politicians use quotations where they feel an advantage, of course, and a well-placed quotation is also effective when presenting a counter-arguement.It would seem that the words of another can be a distraction, lend credibility or the opposite, and sometimes even create the illusion of insight.

You may remember expressions from the Terminator, Dirty Harry, or indeed Harry Potter. Well someone had to spend a little time and dedication to forming or fashioning basic English into a memorable cliche-like quotation. These people, presumably script writers, largely did and do so, for a specific reason.

It doesn't have to spectacular either, and quotations can be viewed like "catch phrases".

Here is a quick one:
"One can take to hate faster than love, and less discriminately".
There was nothing too difficult about that! And while almost meaningless, in the correct situation, its importance could change.

Roller bearings.

Since Murphy or whoever it was, took credit for the round wheel, rolling and bearing technology has changed somewhat.
Today, friction whether static or dynamic, is reliant on bearings to reduce motor or engine load. What is sometimes overlooked is the inherent features and design of a bearings to reduce temperature where it is not necessary. The basic requirement is to reduce contacting surface areas. More extreme requirements are to reduce vibration, reduce allotted space required to house such a bearing, and extend their life.

Needle roller bearings are used where the load is spread length ways, and a typical or common application would be the “big end” bearings of motorcycles. Plain bearings are still used in the big ends, of cars and most other crankshaft scenarios. The principle behind a plain bearing is that the thinner a material is, the harder it is to compress or displace it. Plain bearings, often called bushings, can be “steel backed” with a relatively thin coating of white metal applied to the bearing contact surface. This would be the common type in the automotive big end applications, and should a piece of offensive hard material contaminate the oil, it can be safely embedded within the white metal. Should it be small enough then it is not an issue.
More plain bearings can be of a bronze base with impurities cast or sintered into them. The purpose is to absorb oil or lubricant before application, and become “self-lubricating, for a limited time anyway. Many years before the industrial revolution, bearings were made from anything available that was considered appropriate. Timber, sometimes from apple trees but not in any way exclusive to them, have been used in windmills and water mills.

Indeed, stone bushings were not unusual. You’ve heard of the more expensive watches been said to contain “X number of Jewels”? The purpose of such jewels was to reduce friction and associated loads. This would be a loose example of metal to stone contact.
Thrust bearings are designed to work through a different axis, and may be ball-type, cylindrical roller type or a combination of both. Taper roller bearings are an example.
High temperature bearings have in-built allowance for expansion, or to put it another way; they have more clearance. High-speed bearings often have “cages” made from non-metallic materials. Typically, this material is tufnol or plastic. Incidentally, in low-speed, combustion-risk situations, the cages can be made from brass as well. This is to help reduce any incidence of “sparking” between the balls/rollers and the cage itself. The reason for a cage in the first place, is to maintain distance between rollers/balls, because it is only in the cases of high low to space ratios, where no space is needed that cages are unnecessary and these are low speed applications.
Other low speed bearing/plain bushings are also “steel backed” with a coating of P.T.F.E. or other plastic on them. Again, this is to give some self lubrication properties, as well as to reduce friction. P.T.F.E. happens to be excellent, as it has a low coefficient of friction.
Bearing failure is primarily due to misalignment and contamination. Of course, there are many variables, such as instances where undue load/other mechanical failure happens to be the case. A common cause of failure in the case of automotives, is lack of oil or insufficient oil pressure. Absence of proper cooling, generally, will bring excessive loads.
Bearing failure is all too often due to improper installation or fitting practices. Indeed, bearings can be “on the way out” almost immediately. Induction coil heaters are readily available from manufacturers to ease the fitting operation, and spare the bearings undue trauma. Mechanical shock from abuse with a hammer has destroyed many new bearings and they are destined to fail, as little actual work will verify.
Indeed, I’ve seen a case where a six-year old machine was overdue some maintenance, and got new bearings fitted six times in six months. It would have been best to leave it overdue; such was the fitting skill of the men involved. Even without the hammer, contamination while fitting, poses massive problems. Allowing foreign bodies to migrate into the bearing will have a detrimental effect.
Once fitted even, contaminants from its oil/grease/air supply can make running conditions unbearable. Clean lubricants and environments are the answer, and in the specific case of oil; clean filters, lines and the oil itself, will provide an up-time saving.

The Wonders Of Calendula
seth2004 writes "When I first started growing herbs I knew very little about them. I had a friend in Denver who was teaching me how to weave baskets and when it was time for lunch, she would go to her patio garden and snip the herbs from the pots. I was introduced to new and exciting ingredients for vegetables and salads. Anything could improve a salad, chocolate is more my taste, but the herbs helped me learn to enjoy the salad gracefully. I even learned to enjoy eating them before my triple chocolate cheesecake with chocolate topping. When we bought our own home, I started my herb garden. I did not realize what a wonderful rewarding lifestyle I had entered. It is a limitless adventure. Now I make dried arrangements, potpourri, hand dip my own incense and make some topical salves and ointments. The herb I would like to tell you about is Calendula. The nickname for this plant is the edible marigold. It is a pretty orange daisy-like flower. I like to harvest the flowers’ head-stems after a rain so they are clean. I leave them on the stem until they are dry, or lay them on paper towels.

Once the heads are dry, place them in a Ball or Mason jar. Make sure your jar is dry of water also. Water in your jar after washing it or water on the flower petals will cause your end product to appear cloudy.I fill the dry jar with the dry flower heads then add sweet almond oil. I use a Ball jar with a zinc top, which helps reduce the temptation of the top to grow mold. I place the jar on a sunny windowsill and let it sit for several days. Next, I strain the oil from the flowers, keeping the oil and add new flowers and repeat the process until the oil is a dark golden color. I add Vitamin E and Aloe Vera to the oil. The Vitamin E is used as preservative for the oil. If you have difficulty finding sweet almond oil you can use canola oil and pierce a few Vitamin E capsules into the oil. You will need to keep the canola oil in the fridge to keep it from spoiling. I also add jojoba oil, which is a fixative.

The combination of carrier oils I use allows me to store the calendula oil out of the refrigerator. You will find that storing the oil in the refrigerator will, over time, look as if it is growing a large mold mass. Do not be alarmed as this is not mold. Take the jar out and shake it and when the oil returns to room temperature it will be clear. The best way to detect spoilage is to smell or you can actually see mold growing on the top or sides of the jar. In that case, I would dispose of it. Be sure of course to label the bottle with all the ingredients so everyone will know what is in it and if they are allergic to any of them they should not use it.Now comes the fun part. I have found that calendula has anti-viral properties. I sell the oil and a salve that I make for this purpose. I would also mention that any product that works for me might not work for you. I will list only the uses and benefits of this herb that I have experienced. I raise herbs and I spend a lot of time with my hands in the dirt and water.

As a result, I have the cracks that develop around the tips of my fingernails. I have taken the salve, placed it on the crack and covered it with a band-aid. After several nights of following this routine, the crack will close. The calendula oil has saved me many a time from the burn of the glue gun or glue pot. If you accidentally get the glue on your skin do not try to remove it, you will burn your fingers, and if the glue covers a large area it can pull your skin off with it. My solution is to run cold water on the affected area, then apply the calendula salve or oil. Once I put three of my fingers in the glue pot and used the calendula salve in the following manner: I poured the calendula salve over ice and put my fingers in the bowl with the ice. Once the sting of the burn has stopped, I removed my fingers from the bowl, peeled off the glue, and underneath was normal skin. No redness, no blister, nothing. I was amazed. On a smaller scale the calendula oil can help with sunburns also.

Another use of the calendula is for acne. It can help keep a lesion from developing a whitehead. It will also speed up the process so the whitehead can be expressed easily. Afterward, it will help heal the lesion and dry it up faster. I am prone to cold sores and I can tell when one is starting by the tingling sensation on the corner of my mouth. I apply the calendula, oil or salve, and the cold sore does not develop.For slivers or embedded items in your fingers the calendula oil will draw the object to the surface. I have worked several times to remove a sliver. It is not something I enjoy. If the sliver is not exposed where you can grab it with tweezers, I apply the salve or oil and cover with a band-aid. Sometime this takes several applications. I then just push on the area around the sliver and out it comes. I know it sounds too good to be true but it does work for me. I also have repeat customers asking for the calendula oil and salve once they have tried it. Another good use is for bee stings or bug bites. The calendula oil will stop the sting and stop the itch of the bug bite or rash. You need to use common sense of course about the rashes. If you know how you react to a certain pathogen then you know how prone you are to the severity of the reaction.

Some rashes can simply run their course while others may require medical advice. The calendula will just stop the itch and help you be more comfortable. It will not cure the cause.If the rash is poison ivy or poison oak the calendula oil will stop the itching. The infection can easily grow if you simply spread any oil or salve over it. To prevent the spread of the infection, I would dab the lesions with a clean q-tip for each spot. Again using common sense is a word to the wise. You know how you react and unless you just carelessly smear the calendula on the area it will cause you no harm to use it. This last example of calendula oil and salve is it’s uses in helping my older chocolate lab, Caleb, with his hot spots. Because all of the ingredients are editable, I can apply the calendula salve onto the effected area without worry. Of course, he would spend some time licking. That is their natural way to attempt to heal an irritation.

Being consistent with the application of the calendula oil the spot will heal. When Caleb gets stressed or upset he will start on a different spot and we start the process all over again. At least it keeps the lesions fairly shallow and he has never had an infection from the hot spots. I am always amazed with the results.In conclusion, I think calendula is a great herb with a lot of beneficial uses.
